The role of a Pediatric Emergency Care Coordinator (PECC) within an EMS agency or Emergency Department (ED) is to work collaboratively with the organization's leadership, to include administrators and medical directors, to improve the care of children. In the most basic sense, the PECC is a point of contact within the agency for all matters related to pediatric care. The PECC does not have to be a final decision maker for the organization but a conduit for information sharing. This includes:
- Promoting pediatric continuing-education opportunities
- Ensures that the pediatric perspective is included in the development of EMS protocols
- Ensures that fellow providers follow pediatric clinical practice guidelines
- Ensures the availability of pediatric medications, equipment, and supplies
- Assists with pediatric-process improvement
- Liaises with their counterparts with other EMS agencies and EDs
- Promotes agency participation in pediatric-injury prevention programs
- Promotes family-centered care
- Promotes agency participation in pediatric-research efforts
